DALLAS, Texas August 23, 2016 — Long-time members of Hunt Valley Country Club, an Arcis Golf property in the scenic Maryland countryside, must wonder if they are in the right place when they arrive to play golf. The recent transformation of Hunt Valley is that dramatic.
“This has been a true revitalization of the entire property,” said general manager Chris Hanns of the $2.5-million project. “Arcis Golf has positioned Hunt Valley as the premier playing experience and most contemporary golf club in the region.”
Located 22 miles north of downtown Baltimore, in an affluent community that was once known for historic horse farms, Hunt Valley Country Club features 27 holes of golf that meanders through rolling hills and picturesque valleys. Thick stands of mature trees frame bentgrass fairways and generous greens, along with numerous streams and other water features add to the golf course’s scenic beauty.
To establish tour-quality playing conditions, enhanced landing areas and artfully framed greens complexes, Arcis Golf directed a redesign of the Red and White nines, originally laid out in the late 1960s. The renovation was completed this spring by Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design, led by architect Jason Straka. Enhanced shot values were created while improving the playability of the routings. The strategic removal of select trees opened wide vistas on numerous holes.
Bunkers were refashioned, made deeper and given high, white-sand faces, while also being fitted with the highly-efficient “Better Billy Bunker” system.
“While planning the redesign of the bunkers,” Straka said, “we reduced their total area and significantly improved the surface and subsurface drainage around them, as well. Golfers will notice improved conditioning and playability as a result.”
A new practice range features two-elevated tiers with grass hitting surfaces and artificial turf. The range also was extended to accommodate a full array of clubs, benefitting golfers warming up and practicing as well as the club’s staff of PGA golf professionals and their students.
To maximize the views of the Hunt Valley, the clubhouse interior was recreated with an open, flowing floorplan that feeds onto an expansive new deck. The new member grill – “Canter Kitchen + Cocktails” – is a combination gastropub and sports lounge, with a striking granite-top bar and festive indoor dining area that capitalizes on wrap-around views of the golf course and the magnificent valley below.
“The restaurant makes a dramatic new statement, from the décor, to the service and the menu,” Hanns said. “We offer all fresh local seafood, some great new craft beer, and a wine list with selections ideally paired with our menu.”
The new deck offers casual seating areas, tables and chairs surrounding several fire pits. And there are plenty of big-screen televisions inside and out.
“It’s become one big gathering spot out there,” Hanns said. “It’s great to see everyone enjoying it so much, whether it’s after they play golf, or just to have a good time with friends.”
The transformation of Hunt Valley Country Club positions it as the area’s premier venue for private events, weddings, corporate golf tournaments, and community fund-raising events. “Arcis Golf’s investment in Hunt Valley Country Club is generating so much enjoyment of the club,” Hanns said. “Our members feel like they belong to a brand new club.”
Arcis Golf has recently allocated $50 million in major capital improvements to its portfolio of 68 public and private facilities nationwide, an indication of the dynamic direction the Dallas-based company is taking in the golf industry.
